Work Experience: A Vital Component of Our Courses
Work experience is a crucial and mandatory part in all of our courses. It must be completed in order for learners to gain the full major award they are studying.
It bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world practice, giving learners the opportunity to develop practical skills, gain valuable insights, and enhance their employability.
As part of their education, learners are expected to secure their own work placements. However, our staff are always available to guide and support them throughout the process.
We ensure that each student’s placement is relevant to their course, ensuring they receive the best possible learning experience. For instance, students studying nursing will undertake placements in healthcare settings, directly aligning with their future career path.

Work Experience Hours & Schedule
The number of hours required for work experience varies depending on the course.
Placement formats
- One day per week
- Block placements, such as full weeks at a time
Learners will receive clear guidance at the beginning of the programme regarding:
- The total number of hours required
- The schedule and format of the placement
- Any flexibility or requirements specific to their course
- Their responsibilities and commitments
The course coordinator and work experience teacher will provide ongoing support and ensure learners understand their commitments.
Preparation for Work Experience
It is important that learners are well-prepared before starting their work experience placement. The preparation they receive includes:
Garda Vetting
Ensure all necessary background checks are completed and approved.
Extra Training
Additional training may include manual handling, health and safety procedures and industry-specific certifications.
College Insurance Letter
A formal letter will confirm that the learner is covered under the college’s insurance policy during the placement.
Supervisor’s Report
Learners and employers will receive information about reporting, assessment and feedback.

- Punctuality and attendance
- Professional workplace communication
Uniform Requirements
Learners must wear the appropriate uniform as required by their placement. The college or employer will provide details on:
- Required clothing, such as scrubs, business attire or high-visibility vests
- Footwear requirements, such as safety shoes or formal shoes
- Personal protective equipment, where applicable
